PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP AT A GLANCE

Capture glorious autumn hues in the majestic Julian Alps on this seven-day Slovenia photo tour, including Soca Valley, Lake Bled & Triglav National Park.

Key photo locations include Lake Jasna, Slovenia's first Biosphere Reserve, Soca Valley, the spectacular Mangart and Vrsic mountain passes, the tranquil waters of Lake Bohinj, and two picturesque churches juxtaposed against alpine peaks.

No photography workshop in this beautiful part of the world would be complete without focusing on the enchanting Lake Bled, with its medieval 11th century castle and church-topped island. And with all transport during the Slovenia photography workshop included, you'll have time to relax and enjoy the breathtaking landscapes of the country known as "the green heart of Europe".

This trip is as much about meeting and exchanging ideas and anecdotes with your fellow photographers as it is about boosting your photography skills. With a maximum of just six people on the workshop, it's a friendly space with a relaxed pace, including plenty of time for individual tuition from Tom.

With Tom's expert guidance, you'll discover how to maximise the photo opportunities at a location with a range of compositions, explore how to work with the light, and master the full potential of your camera's many settings and your lens choices. You'll also develop your post-production skills - although the emphasis is always on getting it as perfect as possible in-camera, so you don't have to spend hours glued to your computer correcting errors when you could be out taking more photographs!

Your accommodation includes a well-appointed private room and a hearty breakfast - just the thing to set you up for a day out in the fresh air on location. This part of the world has some rather moreish speciality dishes to sample to keep up your energy levels, too! Try specialities like struklji (sweet or savoury rolled dumplings), jota (a spiced stew typically made with potatoes, sauerkraut, beans and pork), kranjska sausages and potica (rolled dough cake with a delectable range of sweet fillings to choose from).

SLOVENIA WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS

After meeting up at Ljubljana Airport, we'll take a short drive to the charming ski resort of Kranjska Gora, which will be our base for the first three nights of our workshop. Just a few minutes' stroll outside the town lies the picturesque Lake Jasna. Actually two interconnected artificial lakes, it's an idyllic spot for sunset images of the surrounding peaks reflected in tranquil turquoise waters.

Kranjska Gora is also the perfect jumping-off spot for Triglav National Park, Slovenia's first Biosphere Reserve - some 325 square miles of unspoilt forested mountains, plunging ravines, pristine lakes and rolling alpine pastures. The Mangart Pass yields spectacular sunsets, while the crisp morning temperatures often give rise to inversions, trapping mist or cloud banks low in the valleys, with the mountaintops and trees peeping appealingly through.

We'll also be exploring the bewitching Soca Valley, whose emerald-green river has carved out a series of stunning waterfalls and gorges through the limestone terrain. Access is via the Vrsic pass - at 5,285ft, the highest in Slovenia, with magnificent views on the descent into Soca.
The remaining four nights of our workshop are centred on the fairytale location of Lake Bled, with its medieval 11th century castle standing sentinel on a precipice overlooking its northern shore, and Slovenia's only island, complete with an exquisite Baroque church.

Divinely photogenic churches are something of a theme for this area, and we'll be focusing on two in particular - St Primoz at Jamnik, and St Thomas, both perched atop small hills, flanked by trees and backdropped by endless stacks of soaring alps. St Primoz is illuminated at night, which makes shooting at dawn or dusk a joy, while St Thomas is best captured in the morning, with the autumn sun providing its own natural spotlight. We'll also be visiting Lake Bohinj, Slovenia's largest natural lake. Only half an hour's drive from Lake Bled, it's a wonderful place for peaceful landscapes and calm reflections of golden autumnal forests.

Whether you're a beginner or a semi-pro, you'll find plenty to learn and enjoy on this workshop.

You'll require either a digital camera with at least a 16GB memory card (minimum 32GB if it's high resolution) or a film camera (SLR, medium, large or wide format) - Tom has many years of experience working with both.

Additional kit - a tripod, shutter release and polarising filter will help you maximise your shooting opportunities, although they aren't essential.

Average fitness levels are required, as there will be quite a lot of walking, although nothing too strenuous.

Northwest Slovenia is fairly wet all year round, and October is no exception, so bring full waterproofs (including for your camera and lenses). Average temperatures in this Alpine region are on the cool side - averaging 14C / 57F by day and 3C / 38F at night around Kranjska Gora, and a couple of degrees warmer at Lake Bled - so warm clothes and items you can layer are highly recommended.

To ensure ample time for one-to-one tuition, this workshop is limited to six places, so book early to secure your spot.

After that, the confines of a Los Angeles commercial studio were never going to hold him. Tom married his art to this new-found passion and embarked on a 'til death-do-us-part' relationship with landscape photography.
