PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP AT A GLANCE

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP AT A GLANCE

Join Tom Mackie for four days of inspiring, late-summer landscape photography, capturing the outstanding natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Key photo locations include Hawdraw Force, Aysgarth Falls and Cauldron Falls - offering some of the best waterfall photo opportunities in England. We'll also be shooting the imposing natural amphitheatre of Malham Cove and the surrounding unique limestone pavements (as seen in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), as well as the quiet beauty of Swaledale, dotted with limestone field barns.

All transport during the workshop is included - giving you time to enjoy the glorious Dales and get to know your fellow photographers.

With a maximum of just three people on the workshop, it's a relaxed, friendly experience, with plenty of time for individual tuition from Tom.

With Tom's expert guidance, you'll discover how to maximise the potential of your camera and lenses in the changing light - and weather - conditions from sunrise to sunset, and learn how to work a scene to produce a great range of compositions. You'll also develop your post-production skills for those all-important finishing touches, although Tom will help you get as much right in-camera as possible. After all, who wants to be stuck behind a screen retouching when they could be out there in the glorious countryside with their camera!

Your accommodation includes a well-appointed private room and a delicious full English breakfast.

There will be some hiking involved over uneven terrain and steep slopes, so a decent level of fitness and good walking boots are advised.

YORKSHIRE DALES WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS

For this four-day workshop we'll be based in the charming market town of Settle, nestling in the shadow of the imposing limestone slab of Castleberg Crag. It's the perfectly located base for exploring the photographic delights of what's often called "God's Own County". Given the inevitably changeable weather and lighting conditions of Northern England, we'll follow a flexible itinerary.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park is home to many spectacular waterfalls, including the powerful Hardraw Force, set in a natural amphitheatre (and within the grounds of the historic Green Dragon Inn). Plunging some 100ft (30m) over exposed limestone beds from a tree-crowned plinth, it's England's highest single-drop waterfall. The beautiful Wensleydale villages of Aysgarth, with its stepped triple falls on the River Ure, and West Burton, with its scenic plunge-pool waters known as Cauldron Falls, are just a few of the other waterfall locations we'll enjoy shooting.
As well as exploring Wensleydale, we'll head over to the peace and tranquillity of Swaledale, one of the most northernmost dales and close to the Cumbrian border. With unique limestone field barns dotted amongst its wildflower meadows, tumbling waterfalls and wild expanses of heather moorland, this is a landscape of quietly stunning natural beauty.

Another highlight of the workshop will be a visit to the unique landscape around Malham Cove. Intriguing sinkholes, underground caves and a breathtaking 260ft (79m) curved limestone cliff face make this a very special place to photograph. The deeply eroded limestone pavement above the cove - featured in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - is one of the best-preserved examples in the country and offers the chance to capture some truly iconic images. We'll also be photographing the isolated, windblown trees growing out of the limestone pavements at Twistleton Scars and Malham - starkly beautiful against the skyline at any time of day.

WORKSHOP DETAILS

What's included?
  • Tuition, Bed & Breakfast for 3 nights, transport during the workshop

What's not included?
  • Transport to the hotel base, meals not mentioned, insurance
Whether you're a beginner or a semi-pro, you'll find plenty to learn and enjoy on this workshop.
You'll require either a digital camera with at least a 16GB memory card (minimum 32GB if it's high resolution) or a film camera (SLR, medium, large or wide format) - Tom has many years of experience working with both.

Additional kit - a tripod, shutter release and polarising filter will help you maximise your shooting opportunities, although they aren't essential.

A good level of fitness is required, as there will be some steep hikes.

As with any time of year in Yorkshire, the weather in August in the Dales can be changeable, with a typical daily high of 18C/64F and an average minimum of 10C/50F, so clothes you can layer are highly recommended. Rain is always a possibility, so waterproofs are essential, as are decent walking boots, as we'll be doing a fair bit of walking.

To ensure you get plenty of one-to-one tuition from Tom, this workshop is restricted to just three participants, so book early to avoid disappointment.

After that, the confines of a Los Angeles commercial studio were never going to hold him. Tom married his art to this new-found passion and embarked on a 'til death-do-us-part' relationship with landscape photography.
